Re-Routing the Furnace Cold Air Return...

... to reduce noise from furnace blower into the living area.

After reading Adam's (moderator at AFNash.com) experience with this mod, I decided to look into doing it on my 27-5L 5th wheel.  The plan is to block the airflow through the original furnace cold air return girll and provide an alternate path for the cold air return which will dampen the blower noise.  In the case of the 27-5L, this was accomplished by opening a path from the furnace area, through the lower kitchen cabinets, to the converter vent grill.

Furnace is located on bottom left corner under refrigerator.  Converter was located behind grill lower right of sink.  Converter has been moved to basement near batteries, but is not required for this mod.

Cut away the divider between furnace and stove compartments.  More than 100 Sq-In of airflow is available around lower drawer.  Stove area has been partially enclosed.  Silver box is the inverter transfer relay

View of furnace (under refrigerator) and stove enclosure.  3/8" plywood placed behind furnace grill to block airflow and noise.  Enclosing the stove area was required because the stove has air intakes on the sides and bottom.  The cold air return mod creates an area of lower air pressure around the stove which would affect stove performance, and possible safety.

Completed stove enclosure - Note air intake behind stove top.  Results:  Furnace noise reduced significanly.  TV can be heard comfortably without raising the volume when furnace cycles on.
