Shelter Cove

For our 3rd anniversary, Eric and I went to a small secluded town in way northern California. Shelter Cove is on California's Lost Coast. It takes about 5 hours to get there by car and goes up a long and windy very scary road. So instead of wasting most of our weekend driving, we opted to fly. Yes, fly. The town has a small runway. It's a very pilot friendly town. The hotels all shuttles for pilots and the real estate office has a pilot lounge.

The flight up was GORGEOUS!!! We followed the coast for a little bit and from the airplane the coast is spectacular.

The view in town wasn't too shabby either. The town is, obviously, a little cove. The ocean is on the west, the mountains on the east. The edge of land is moreorless a clff. The coast is rocky and very dangerous looking. But the waves are breathtaking when they crash on the rocks. We sat on our balcony and watched the tide roll in and the sunset. Our hotel room had a spa for two, fireplace, sauna, reclining leather sofa, balcony, California King bed, and a kitchenette.

I'd love to go back someday when we have more money and go hiking and explore the mountains and trails. Being there just one night, we really only had time for a little bit of siteseeing. We enjoyed the scenery from the coffee shop and walked over to the tide pools and visited the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse.

And more random coastline.

Coastline .... can you tell I like taking pictures of the coast?

Random coastline. I really like seeing the rocks stick out and the waves crashing against them.

It's not a great shot, but I love it. This is the runway of Shelter Cove.

I LOVE watching the waves crash onto the rocks.

More wave crashing!

The beginning of the sunset series.

Sunset.

This reminds me of a scene in a Star Wars movie.

Nothing left but an orange hue.

We were visited by a very friendly deer. The owner of the inn fed him some hamburger buns. No wonder he's so friendly.

This picture is to show the proximity of things to the runway. I was standing at the plane when I took a picture of the golfer on the golf course. The golf course surrounds the runway and is no more than 5 feet from the edge of what could be considered the tarmac.

Cape Mendocino Lighthouse. It was moved here in 1995 after nearly falling into the ocean at Cape Mendocino.
